Notes:

  • I was very excited to play Sloop John B (A Cappella) by The Beach Boys, John Allyn Smith Sails by Okkervil River, and I Want To Go Home by Johnny Cash. The song that most of us know as Sloop John B is actually a folk song that is much older. Johnny Cash’s 1959 version isn’t even considered the definitive one. More info at Wikipedia. (or your local library, kids!)
  • Odd Blood by Yeasayer is out 02/09/2010. They are releasing it digitally on Amazon for a special price today, 02/08. — Also, Yeasayer will be on tour with Sleigh Bells this winter/spring. In Madison 04/28/2010 at the Majestic.
  • One Life Stand by Hot Chip is out 02/09/2010. They just performed on Jimmy Fallon, which you can see here.
  • Heligoland by Massive Attack is out 02/09/2010. They had been streaming their album over at NPR.
  • Peter Gabriel just released an album of covers called Scratch My Back, which includes not only the Bon Iver track that I played today, but Heroes by Bowie, My Body Is A Cage by The Arcade Fire, and The Book Of Love by The Magnetic Fields. I haven’t picked up a copy yet, but I plan to.
  • I have a big place in my heart for Soul Coughing. They are a band I wouldn’t have known about except for college radio. I had to play this song after Mike Doughty posted on Twitter, “Soul Coughing fans note: the real-life Janine is texting me exultant texts about that touchdown call.”

Notes:

  • I am very tired today. I did a lot less planning and a lot more freestyling on the show today. I hope it did not disappoint.
  • Spoon will be playing a few shows nearby: Thu 1 April @ Aragon in CHI. Fri/Sat 2-3 April @ First Avenue in Minneapolis. All dates with Deerhunter and Micachu & The Shapes. I am very, very excited for this show. **Update: Fri 2 Apr is sold out.
  • Califone will be opening for Wilco at the sold-out show in Madison on Saturday, 20 February 2010. Had I known they were coming, I would have tried harder to get tickets.
  • A Place To Bury Strangers will be playing with The Big Pink at Turner Hall in Milwaukee on Friday, 19 March 2010. 8pm show. $10. Excited to make this trip.
  • Ted Leo + Pharmacists will be playing the High Noon in Madison on Sunday 14 March 2010. 8pm show. Tix $13 adv/$15 dos

  • Thanks to Dave Zero for letting me sub for his show, and for his awesome recommendations on albums by The Beach Boys & The Velvet Underground. I’m a fan of both bands, but haven’t owned these.

  13. Elephants by Warpaint from Exquisite Corpse [Manimal Vinyl]

Notes:

  • The video for Rad Anthem by Rad Omen is actually pretty rad, in the sense that it features fast food mascots getting into all sorts of trouble.  It is decidedly NOT SAFE FOR WORK.  You have been warned.
  • I am still waiting to get my hands on a copy of Toeachizown by Dam Funk. His label, Stones Throw, released Speak The Truth as a single to thank customers for their patience during a manufacturing delay.
  • Parenthetical Girls will be releasing their next album as a limited series of 12″ EPs. The first, Privilege Part I, comes out on 2/23/2010. As the band says on its website, “These EPs will be sold separately in sequence every quarter over the next 15 months, each as they are completed. They will not be distributed to stores.” Also, they will be “hand-numbered in the blood of their respective band members.” Ouch.
  • Odd Blood, the new album by Yeasayer will be out 2/9/2010. If you were lucky enough to have heard it at a local listening party, you are probably as stoked about it coming out as I am.
  • MC Chris rejects the nerdcore label, even though it’s hard to deny. You may have heard him on [adult swim], or around town. His new album, MC Chris Is Dead, is a lot of fun.

Notes:

  • Adam WarRock is the stage name of Euge Ahn. Euge and Ruckus will be reworking the demo of Ira Glass to include an original beat. Respect to Pete Rock.
  • New Spoon Album, Transference, is out Tuesday 01/26/2010 on Merge. It’s streaming right now over at NPR’s All Songs Considered. I’ve enjoyed both “Got Nuffin” and “Written In Reverse” but the rest of the album hasn’t grabbed me yet. I’m hoping it’s a grower.
  • Pearl Harbor started as two sisters from California, though they’ve added a boy for live performances. Check out an MP3 from their album Something About the Chaparrals over at Stereogum.
  • Radiohead / Fiery Furnaces / Beck internet-feud via Pitchfork. I really should have bought & played the actual Radiohead song Harry Patch.
  • Surfer Blood ‘s album Astrocoast comes out tomorrow from Kanine Records. Highly recommended. There’s also a pie chart from the Chicago Tribune breaking it down. I agree, tambourines get extra points.
  • You’ve probably already heard of Broken Bells by now, but the project with DJ Dangermouse & James Mercer [of The Shins] is going to get more hype before the actual album gets released. From what I’ve heard, it’s worth it.
  • Also, shouts out to Eau Claire, Wisconsin-based Laarks. I’m a sucker for collective nouns, as found in the title to their record An Exaltation of Laarks. The title, and the one track that I’ve heard have peaked my interest. Once I track down the actual album, I’ll report back.
  • You can check out mp3s of “I’m Not Going Anywhere” by Nika + Rory and “Scissor” by Liars on their respective websites. Seabear also have a new album coming out in March. They are from Iceland, but are a lot more gentle pop music than the weirdness that is Bjork.
  • Likewise, you can download Jay Reatard’s cover of Nirvana’s Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle via his website.  I only got to see a few minutes of him opening for The Pixies last year, but he had an intensity that was hard to ignore. RIP Jay.

A couple of thoughts:

Yo La Tengo will be playing in Madison @ Barrymore Theatre, Jan 23, 2010, 8pm. Tickets available via True Endeavors or The Barrymore.

Combination Pizza Hut And Taco Bell was just too weird of an internet meme to not include. Consider this Pitchfork Review of this song. Also worth considering, this Overcompensating Comic about this song. Then again, maybe that’s just too obscure.

I was sad to see Flight Of The Conchords get canceled, but the series probably had run its course. I would have preferred to play Too Many Dicks (On The Dancefloor), but that’s probably not FCC-friendly. I loved seeing these guys live, since I doubt I’ll get the chance again anytime soon.

Beck’s version of Sunday Morning by The Velvet Underground was one of the highlights of his Record Club project for me. Basically, he and his friends got together to play covers of famous songs by The Velvet Underground, Leonard Cohen, and Skip Spence. By his friends, I mean Jeff Tweedy, Leslie Feist, and Devendra Banhart. Project is ongoing at Beck’s website.
