PR016 – The Ultimate

BFF.fm Archive Link: PR016 – The Ultimate

Starting out the show with a joke track. No. Check that. It’s a track that started out as a joke, and then morphed into something wonderful. Start at the beginning. John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats was joking around on twitter with Rian Johnson, who is directing the new Star Wars movie. He suggested a song titled: The Ultimate Jedi Who Wastes All The Other Jedi And Eats Their Bones. Rian replied to John: PLEASE WRITE THIS. And so he did.

Still playing catch up to 2016, and it’s already February. Why did it take me so long to get Aesop Rock, Kate Tempest, and Bleached? Special shout-out to my friend Aaron who turned me on to The Scientists (and The Limiñanas back in the day). Also, I finally picked up Full Cold Moon by Cold Cave.

New (live) music from Sleater-Kinney, Cloud Nothings, Surfer Blood, and Japandroids. Going to play RTJ3 until I get through the whole thing. Belated tribute to William Onyeabor. Sending strength to Zachary Cole Smith from DIIV who just checked into rehab. Special shout out to Fire Retarded for deciding to change their name to Fire Heads.

PR015 – Fifteen Years Ago Was Not That Long Ago

BFF.fm Archive Link: PR015– Fifteen Years Ago Was Not That Long Ago

Hour one of the show is mainly music from 2016-2017. There’s a broken bassline on the Suuns track that made me jump back to 1996 for a hot second. Then back to Car Seat Headrest, Savages, Cherry Glazerr. New music from Japandroids, Run The Jewels, Austra, The Regrettes, and Braids.

Hour two of the show started as a discussion about RJD2’s Deadringer album. What grew out of it was a whole lot of nostalgia for yours truly. A little angry hip-hop, some electronic music, some rock, some weirdness. There were politicians that I disagreed with. The state of the world felt poor.

Thank goodness for Definitive Jux, brainchild of El-Producto & Amaechi Uzoigwe. Def Jux is how I first heard Aesop Rock, Cannibal Ox, RJD2 and El-P. (No, I had not heard of Company Flow at the time.)

I am pretty sure that I first heard of Beth Orton on the Chemical Brothers’ Exit Planet Dust. As far as her solo work, I remember hearing Daybreaker before Central Reservation. I would have to dig out some mix CDs from the time to be sure.

But Doves. Oh man, Doves. I was so in love with that band. Ladytron, too. Both groups put out their second albums in 2002. Neither suffered from the sophomore slump. Who else? Throw in some Idlewild, Decemberists, and Trail Of Dead, and you take me back to a lot of live shows from that year.

I will continue this thread at another time. Maybe next week.
