Notes:

  • I was very excited to play Sloop John B (A Cappella) by The Beach Boys, John Allyn Smith Sails by Okkervil River, and I Want To Go Home by Johnny Cash. The song that most of us know as Sloop John B is actually a folk song that is much older. Johnny Cash’s 1959 version isn’t even considered the definitive one. More info at Wikipedia. (or your local library, kids!)
  • Odd Blood by Yeasayer is out 02/09/2010. They are releasing it digitally on Amazon for a special price today, 02/08. — Also, Yeasayer will be on tour with Sleigh Bells this winter/spring. In Madison 04/28/2010 at the Majestic.
  • One Life Stand by Hot Chip is out 02/09/2010. They just performed on Jimmy Fallon, which you can see here.
  • Heligoland by Massive Attack is out 02/09/2010. They had been streaming their album over at NPR.
  • Peter Gabriel just released an album of covers called Scratch My Back, which includes not only the Bon Iver track that I played today, but Heroes by Bowie, My Body Is A Cage by The Arcade Fire, and The Book Of Love by The Magnetic Fields. I haven’t picked up a copy yet, but I plan to.
  • I have a big place in my heart for Soul Coughing. They are a band I wouldn’t have known about except for college radio. I had to play this song after Mike Doughty posted on Twitter, “Soul Coughing fans note: the real-life Janine is texting me exultant texts about that touchdown call.”

Notes:

  • I am very tired today. I did a lot less planning and a lot more freestyling on the show today. I hope it did not disappoint.
  • Spoon will be playing a few shows nearby: Thu 1 April @ Aragon in CHI. Fri/Sat 2-3 April @ First Avenue in Minneapolis. All dates with Deerhunter and Micachu & The Shapes. I am very, very excited for this show. **Update: Fri 2 Apr is sold out.
  • Califone will be opening for Wilco at the sold-out show in Madison on Saturday, 20 February 2010. Had I known they were coming, I would have tried harder to get tickets.

  13. Elephants by Warpaint from Exquisite Corpse [Manimal Vinyl]

Notes:

  • The video for Rad Anthem by Rad Omen is actually pretty rad, in the sense that it features fast food mascots getting into all sorts of trouble.  It is decidedly NOT SAFE FOR WORK.  You have been warned.
  • I am still waiting to get my hands on a copy of Toeachizown by Dam Funk. His label, Stones Throw, released Speak The Truth as a single to thank customers for their patience during a manufacturing delay.
  • Parenthetical Girls will be releasing their next album as a limited series of 12″ EPs. The first, Privilege Part I, comes out on 2/23/2010. As the band says on its website, “These EPs will be sold separately in sequence every quarter over the next 15 months, each as they are completed. They will not be distributed to stores.” Also, they will be “hand-numbered in the blood of their respective band members.” Ouch.
  • Odd Blood, the new album by Yeasayer will be out 2/9/2010. If you were lucky enough to have heard it at a local listening party, you are probably as stoked about it coming out as I am.
  • MC Chris rejects the nerdcore label, even though it’s hard to deny. You may have heard him on [adult swim], or around town. His new album, MC Chris Is Dead, is a lot of fun.
